Take on Stockton’s Reading Challenge

logo-landscapeChallenge yourself to a year of reading in Stockton-on-Tees.

The Stockton reading challenge, which is running from February 2016 to January 2017, offers both adults and children the challenge of borrowing and reading 18 books within 12 months from a wide variety of categories. With different styles, genres and characters to choose from, book-lovers will relish the challenge of trying something new or rediscovering an old favourite.

One young person who is taking up the challenge is four-year-old Jacob Cole from Billingham.  Jacob is an avid reader and has his own You Tube channel where he films his regular library visits with his parents, Steve and Gemma. Throughout the Reading Challenge Jacob will be reviewing the books he chooses and will be uploading these to his channel.

He said: “I like the library because I find new stories and I love to read with my Mam and Dad.”

Stockton Reading Challenge is launched on Saturday 6 February, National Libraries Day. Anyone who would like to use the library but isn’t already a member can visit the mobile library which will be outside the Rediscover Shop on Stockton High Street this Saturday from 9.30am until 4pm. Identification such as a driver’s licence or a letter including the person’s name and address will be required.  You can also sign up to be a member at your local branch library.

Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “There’s nothing better than setting yourself a goal and achieving it.  For book lovers of all ages Stockton’s Reading Challenge is the perfect year-long challenge. We’re always keen to encourage new readers and hope the challenge will inspire people to take up reading for pleasure, broaden what they read and, especially for younger readers, build their confidence.

“All you need to do to take part in this fun challenge is to pick up a reading list from one of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Libraries and choose a book you want to read within the categories to get started.  As you go along fill in the list and once you have worked your way through the 18 different categories return it to your local library.”

Those who complete the challenge will be entered into a prize draw with the chance to win an iPad Mini among other prizes.
