North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

A sheltered housing scheme in Birtley is enjoying a new outlook thanks to The Gateshead Housing Company’s Sustainable Communities Fund.

Pleasant Place had already benefited from a patio, built last year – but the only downside was that residents had to walk around the outside of the building to access it.

Now patio doors have been installed at the scheme, allowing residents easy access to the patio from their communal lounge.

The Sustainable Communities Fund, which was used to pay for the doors, is a joint venture between the housing company and Gateshead Council. It aims to improve estate sustainability and encourage a sense of community.

Pleasant Place residents are already making the most of the improvements. They have been working hard to tidy the garden next to the patio, creating an attractive seating area, and growing their own tomatoes in pots.

Sheltered Scheme Officer Helen Huddart said: “The patio has been a big hit with the residents and has really encouraged them to spend more time in the fresh air – weather permitting!”

Older Persons’ Housing Manager Andrew Yates said: “It’s great that they’re growing their own tomatoes – it encourages a healthy lifestyle both through the gardening activity, and through eating the produce.”
