North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

A1 Scotswood to North Brunton improvement proposals

People in Newcastle are invited to find out more about planned improvements to a busy section of the A1.

Highways England is proposing to change the road layout between Scotswood and North Brunton to create an extra lane in both directions.

This section of the road currently experiences delays, journey time reliability issues and accident problems.

The aim of the proposals is to help improve journey times and safety while supporting economic growth in the region.

A number of events are being held during July and August so that people can find out more about the proposals and give feedback.

Newcastle City Council is working with Highways England and is encouraging people to go along to the events to find out more.

Cllr Arlene Ainsley, Cabinet member for transport and air quality at Newcastle City Council, said: “The A1 is an important route for our city and the wider region but we know that at this section of the road there can be problems with delays and congestion.

“This is not only frustrating for those who find themselves sitting in traffic, it’s also very costly to businesses and to our regional economy.

“Highways England is developing proposals to tackle the issues on this stretch of the road and we are encouraging people to go along to one of the public events to find out more about what is planned.”

Highways England project manager Charlotte Taylor said: “This is an exciting scheme that will help improve motorists’ journeys and cut congestion in the Newcastle area.

“We look forward to people coming along to these public information events to find out more and have their say.”
