A North East accountancy firm with offices in Newcastle and Darlington has appointed a new R&D Tax Executive taking the total headcount of the R&D Tax team to eight.

Dakota Brown has joined the tax department at Haines Watts North East. With a first class honours in Accountancy and Finance, and experience in client-facing roles including a previous role as a mortgage advisor, Dakota is well placed to advise Haines Watts’ wide-ranging portfolio on all areas of R&D taxation.

Commenting on her new role at Haines Watts, Dakota said: “I’m excited to be part of the Haines Watts team. I was attracted to the company because of its excellent reputation for client relationships and delivery. The company invests in the development and training of its people which is great to be part of – I’m sure my skills will develop as my career progresses here at Haines Watts.”

As an R&D Tax Executive, Dakota is responsible for working closely with clients to research and compile reports and analysis which can be used to claim R&D tax relief.

R&D tax relief is a corporation tax incentive which can reduce the tax bill of a company. These tax deductions are not automatically given to businesses and have to be accessed through a claim to HMRC.

If a company is improving, innovating or developing and taking certain risks in doing so it is likely that they can claim. The R&D Tax team at Haines Watts help businesses across the North East access this valuable source of cash flow and savings, having recuperated over £21 million for businesses since 2014.

Dakota, supported by Haines Watts, has already begun studying towards her ATT (Association of Taxation Technicians) qualification. She will work on a varied client portfolio which will include technology companies and architects – as well as a veterinary surgeon and a window manufacturer!

Donna Bulmer, Managing Partner at Haines Watts North East, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Dakota to the team here at Haines Watts. Her knowledge, passion and drive will help us continue to offer expert R&D tax advice to our wide portfolio of clients.

“She is already working towards her ATT qualification and has expressed an interest in furthering her career. We look forward to supporting Dakota as she progresses with her career.”
