Barluga set to launch garden terrace in time for spring

CaptureA MAJOR £180,000 extension project has commenced at popular city centre bar, Barluga, on Grey Street.

The bar will remain open as usual throughout the works which will see the first floor outside terrace extended to create an 80 sq. ft. drinking and dining area which is set to be open to the public in April.

As part of Vaulkhard Group’s £4million development plans to be completed by 2018, Barluga is the latest development to benefit from a restructure, following its most recent launch of Bealim House, which opened last year.

Created by Greenwell Design in Durham, the terrace design complements its urban surroundings as well as providing an oasis-style garden setting.

Director of Vaulkhard Group, Ollie Vaulkhard said: “We are delighted to have been given the go ahead to start this project in time for spring.

“It has always been our plan to extend the small terrace and provide a well needed offering for this area where many of the existing outside areas are on the main street.

“The design has been specifically created to provide customers with an additional place to dine and drink in a relaxed setting and the views across the rooftops of Newcastle are stunning – it is a very unusual place to view from and most people will not be familiar with it.”

The stylish terrace will offer a full service bar and table service with a 100 capacity, 75 of which are seated.

Along with a BBQ area, outside heaters and state-of-the-art heated seats, the sheltering sails enables the terrace to welcome guests all year round in all weathers.

Ollie continued: “We have noticed over the years a huge shift in demand for social eating and drinking with outdoor areas in a pleasant environment and because of the size of the area, we can meet this demand.”

The terrace will be extended over the private car park situated to the rear of the building.

Sarah Smith, partner and head of licensing at Sintons, handled all of the licensing work.

She added: “Barluga is one of the city’s best-known and loved venues, so it is great news for Grey Street and the city’s leisure economy that it is being extended.

“The Vaulkhard Group is behind several of the leading venues in Newcastle and the group is committed to continuing to develop and invest in them, ensuring they maintain their reputation as must-visit leisure destinations.”

The terrace will incorporate landscape foliage for privacy, mood lighting and will be available to hire for private or corporate events.
