Bernicia Homes Awards More Than £30K to Local Community Groups

Bernicia Homes has awarded more than £30k to local community groups in the past 12 months following applications to its community grant scheme.

The scheme received 34 applications requesting a total of over £64k, with 33 applicants receiving full or part grant funding for their community projects.

Sharon Firman, housing officer – resident involvement at Bernicia, said: “At Bernicia, we want to create places that people truly want to live in and we believe the community grant scheme helps us to do this.

“The grants provide community groups with the opportunity to improve their local areas; whether this be by sprucing up a green area, organising a community trip or helping those in need.”

During 2016/17, the scheme helped to enhance the lives of elderly residents by improving the gardens of a sheltered housing scheme, supplied partial funding towards a bus for Ashington Blind Club, provided grant funding for the Full Circle Food Project to deliver food hygiene qualifications and cooking on a budget skills to local residents, and helped Bedlington Station Primary School to revamp their school garden.

Sharon added: “Providing our residents with the help they need to improve and maintain their communities is extremely important to us, and we are delighted to have been able to help so many different schemes in the last 12 months.”
