Berwick MP takes a tour of new Extra Care

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 09.43.01A brand new £7m development of supported homes for older people is nearing completion in Alnwick – and it’s just won the admiration of local MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan.

On a visit to the nearly complete Weavers Court scheme this week, Mrs Trevelyan was shown round by Isos Housing chief executive Keith Loraine, accompanied by Monica Burns from the National Housing Federation.

The MP was shown all the fantastic features of the 58 apartment building, including the new café, hairdressing salon and communal lounge.

She also viewed a show apartment which allows potential shared ownership buyers to see the quality of home they can purchase.

Mr Loraine said: “We’re getting close to the completion of Weavers’ Court – it’s going to be a great addition to the accommodation available for older people in this area.

“We’re pleased to have been able to show Mrs Trevelyan these new facilities, and talk through some of the issues we face when developing supported housing developments of this kind.”

Mrs Trevelyan, MP for Berwick upon Tweed, said: “The investment Isos is making in both appropriate design and small-scale social housing in our villages is wonderful.

“The new higher-care mixed housing they are presently building in Alnwick and hope to build more of across Northumberland, meets the changing requirements and wishes of our older people much better.

“This is a fantastic model of supported housing being rolled out by Isos and I am going to continue working with the National Housing Federation to encourage more of these sort of homes to be built in the years ahead. As a nation we need to be building at least 250,000 more new homes each year.”

Extra Care schemes like Weavers’ Court are designed to promote independence in older and vulnerable people, while enabling those with chronic and other health conditions to live in the community, avoiding the need for admissions into residential care homes.

Apartments at Weavers’ Court are available both to rent and buy through shared ownership. All details are available at www.weavers-court.com and through www.your-move.co.uk in Alnwick or on 01665 603443.
