Boccia Club gets extra help from Paralympic Hero

Screen Shot 2016-03-01 at 12.13.03A new Boccia Club received some extra special training ahead of its first competitive match.

Recently crowned MBE for his service to sport and five times Paralympian and captain of Team GB Paralympics Olympic Team at London 2012 – Stephen Miller visited the club at Hambleton Leisure Centre in Northallerton for the third time to motivate and encourage the players and pass on some very important hints and tips.

“It was great fun and very competitive,” said Councillor Mrs Bridget Fortune, Portfolio holder for Customer and Leisure Services, who attended and took part in the event.

“There was lots of laughter and it was fantastic to see a wide range of ages and abilities all happily playing together. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and I am looking forward to the next one!

“There are coaching and volunteering opportunities available at the club who are always happy to gain extra support for the sessions and I would urge anyone with an interest to get involved with the activities.”

Hambleton Boccia Club which now has 17 registered participants, who all attend sessions on a regular basis has entered a team in the North Yorkshire Boccia league and their first fixtures took place at York at the weekend against Scar Boccia (Scarborough) and Yorvik Boccia (York).

“This was Hambleton Boccia’s first ever set of competitive fixtures and the team managed to hold their own against a number of experienced and recognised international Boccia players,” added Joe McKechnie, Inclusive Sport Officer.

“Despite losing it was a brilliant effort throughout the day, by all of our players and I am delighted with the teams overall performances in their first set of games.”

If successful in the league, the team will be invited to compete at the annual Boccia cup, to compete against teams from the Southern and Northern leagues, with all teams competing to be named the best regional team for that year.
