North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

The bookworm that became an education marketer

Following on from CIM’s launch of 50 North East Marketing Greats, they invite you to meet Helen Bower, Assistant Marketing Director for undergraduate programmes and Northumbria University.

The initiative aims to develop and retain marketing talent in the North East region.  Diane Earles, Network Manager for CIM, explains “‘Through the ‘Marketing Greats’ we want to provide insight into the importance of a strategic marketing function and to inspire both existing marketing professionals and young people considering a career in marketing.  Each ‘Marketing Great’ is profiled in an online case study which includes their words of wisdom for aspiring marketers alongside their career story and why they enjoy working in the region.”  She continued, “Developing our original ‘Great North East Brands’ initiative, which ran for a number of years, ‘Marketing Greats’ provides a regional platform for marketing to be recognised as having a key role in business growth while celebrating the number of senior marketers located in the North East.”

Like Helen, who was probably always destined to work in education having gained English and Creative Writing degrees.  Her love of books originally had Helen loaning books to her friends with handmade tickets to stamp, so she was thinking of a career along the lines of librarian or teacher, then she fell into marketing whilst working in schools.

Helen, who is a Chartered Marketer and has recently been made a fellow of CIM, said, “My first job was working in schools encouraging progression into university, which led me into the field of marketing.  I’ve worked in education all of my adult career and absolutely love the sector.”
