Bookworms Invited to Cross the Tees

Screen Shot 2015-06-15 at 09.00.13A HOST of literary treats are on offer across Stockton Borough as part of the annual Crossing the Tees book festival next week.

The festival, which runs until Saturday 20 June, covers venues across the Tees Valley and offers audiences the chance to get up close and personal with celebrated authors, get involved in creative writing and much more.

On Tuesday (16 June), bestselling author Simon Scarrow spends the evening at Stockton Central Library, from 6.30pm to 8pm, discussing his love for historical novels and looking at the mechanics of his writing style – examining how and why he created his unique characters. Tickets cost £4.

Thursday (18 June) brings poet and comedian Kate Fox to Billingham Library. As one of the UK’s foremost stand-up poets, Kate will be sharing stories and poems from her BBC Radio 4 comedy series and from her books. The event starts at 7pmand tickets are priced at £4.

For those interested in having their own penned material published, Stockton Libraries are hosting a free self-publishing event on Stockton High Street on Saturday 20 June between 11am and 5pm.

Local authors, including John Nicholson, Karen Charlton and Michelle Birbeck, will be on hand to share their innovative and successful routes into self-publishing along with the opportunity to buy their books and get them signed.

Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “The Crossing the Tees festival is growing in popularity ever year and it is not difficult to see why with the range of brilliant events taking place across Stockton Borough.

“There is something for every book lover at this festival so I would encourage residents to come along and continue to inspire their imagination through the written and spoken word.”
