YOUNG race technicians have been competing at the highest level in a project designed to put engineering in pole position.
Richmond School and Sixth Form College fielded a boys’ and a girls’ team in the annual Greenpower Go-kart Race Competition.
Year 7-10 students spent months building and developing electric powered race cars, with the help of Cummins Engines, before descending on Croft Circuit for a championship involving schools from across the country.
Richmond School and Sixth Form College girls came 2 nd in the kit car category and 4 th in the race, in which drivers had to maximise the potential of the battery powered cars to complete as many laps as possible of the 1.1 mile circuit.
The boys also came 4 th in their category and a creditable 9 th overall in a competition which is designed to promote STEM subjects and engineering careers among young people.
Teacher Tristan Bainbridge said: “Richmond School and Sixth Form College places massive emphasis on the importance of STEM subjects among boys and girls.
“The Greenpower contest is a simply brilliant way of making their studies relevant and showing young people the potential that exists in a future in engineering.
“Both of our teams were incredibly passionate about the project and we are already thinking about how we can improve the performance of the cars for next year.”
