The High Street branch donated £125 from its community fund, which has been used by 1stEgglescliffe Scout Group to purchase a shelter ready for its annual summer camps.

The Scout group, based on Croft Road in Eaglescliffe, hosts regular camps through the summer months for its cub, beaver and scout groups.

2016 is an important year for both the Cub Scouts, which was formed 100 years ago in 1916 and Darlington Building Society, which is celebrating its 160th anniversary throughout the year by aiming to help raise £160,000 to help local organisations and causes, such as 1st Egglescliffe Scout Group.

The Scout group was nominated to receive the funding by the branch manager at Yarm, Craig Gregory, who was a scout himself when he was younger and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Craig Gregory, Branch Manager at Darlington Building Society, said: “We wanted to use some of our Community Fund to help local young people, so we approached the Scout group to see how we could help.

“When I was growing up I was a beaver, cub and scout and enjoyed every minute of it. It taught me a lot of skills and kept me out of trouble; some of my best childhood memories are from my time at camp.

“I think it’s important that young people get the chance to be outdoors getting covered in mud and generally having a good time whilst learning skills and forging friendships that can last a lifetime.”

1st Egglescliffe Scout’s Group Scout Leader, Pauline Hyam, said: “We’d like to thank Darlington Building Society for their kind donation, which has been used purchase an updated shelter for our beavers, cubs and scouts to use during our summer camps.

“This summer we will be celebrating our 100th birthday with lots of activities and fun days. We’ll also be holding a ‘Cub100’ camp so it’s fantastic to have a new shelter in time for the camping season.”
