Coast & Country Volunteers Help with Redcar Garden Improvements

17774Volunteers from Coast & Country have answered a call to arms to help spruce up a communal garden in Redcar.

Gardener Paul Leech had been caring for the communal garden on Harwal Road in Coatham on his own. When the work at the garden started to get on top of him, Paul contacted local Councillor Neil Baldwin.

The Coatham Councillor contacted Coast & Country, which gathered volunteers from its Westfield Farm scheme to help Paul with his gardening efforts.

The volunteers helped Paul make improvements to the Harwal Road garden, including weeding and cutting overgrown bushes, as well as making general enhancements to the communal garden.

Tanya Spedding, Asset Management Co-ordinator at Coast & Country, said: “Coast & Country is happy to have helped Paul with Harwell Road’s communal garden. The volunteers have done an amazing job and it is great to see the garden get the care that it needs.

“Coast & Country is committed to building a network throughout the area with people involved in environmental projects and green living areas, so we can all work together towards making our neighbourhoods a great place to live and to help promote appreciation of the environment and nature.”

Councillor Neil Baldwin said: “Paul approached me around two months ago, asking for help in some way with the community garden on Harwal Road, as he was having trouble keeping on top of it and it was becoming too much for him.

“I approached Coast & Country to see if its team could help and they were good enough to give Paul a group of volunteers to help for the day, with one man offering his on-going support. I am absolutely delighted that Paul now has the support he needs through Coast & Country and I know he is really pleased. These spaces are vital for the community to come together.”

Paul Leech said: “I am really grateful for the help I have received from Coast & Country. The volunteers have helped make real improvements to the garden and it looks fantastic as a result.

“I would like to thank Coast & Country for its help in improving the Harwal Road garden. It is an important communal area in Coatham and I appreciate the people who have rallied round to maintain it as I was struggling with the work on my own.”
