THE community reaped the benefit of children’s generosity after they donated food, flowers and cards in a harvest festival collection to be proud of.

Parents, grandparents and friends joined pupils and staff for a chapel service at Barnard Castle Preparatory School before donating a host of fruit, vegetables, tinned food and flowers.

After hymns and readings, a retiring collection was made in aid of The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution. Produce was then distributed to a local food bank and the elderly of Barnard Castle.

School chaplain Father Darren Moore said: “Harvest festival is one of my favourite times of the year when the generosity of prep school children and their families never fails to amaze me.

“When we take the produce to the people who need it they are so appreciative, not simply to receive some very nice treats but also because its shows that someone is thinking about them, which is equally important.”
