Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Cycling a Century for Dementia Awareness and Support

A TEAM of intrepid pedallers will be clocking up the miles next week in support of an important local initiative.

The riders from Middlesbrough’s Staying Put Agency won’t be going anywhere – but they’ll be going a long way to raise funds and awareness for the Dementia Friends project.

They’ll be joined by colleagues from other agencies when they attempt to ride a total of 100 miles in just eight hours on Wednesday, August 23.

The sponsored challenge will take place on a static bike in Middlesbrough’s Captain Cook Square, and the riders are hoping to be joined by a few special guests along the way.

The event will also feature tombolas, raffles and cake stands, with all funds raised going to Dementia Friends.

Staying Put Agency Caseworker Karl Fishburn, who has organised the charity ride, said: “Middlesbrough has been leading the way as a Dementia Friendly town, but we still need to raise awareness.

“We came up with the sponsored bike ride idea as a fun way of getting people involved while raising much-needed funds for such a worthy cause.

“Everybody’s welcome to come along and find out more, give the riders a word of encouragement or even have a go themselves.”

Middlesbrough Mayor Dave Budd, who has spearheaded the town’s drive to become Dementia Friendly, said: “The Dementia Friendly Middlesbrough Project has made great strides in helping to create a supportive and inclusive environment in the town.

“But dementia remains one of the biggest social and economic challenges facing us – not just in Middlesbrough but across the UK – and we still need to do more.

“It’s a condition that could affect any of us directly or indirectly at any time, but with the right care and support, people living with dementia can continue to lead happy and fulfilled lives within their communities.

“This sponsored ride is a great way to spread the word, get new people involved and raise funds for a very important cause.”
