An award-winning law firm, recognised for its own deal making success, has announced it has secured half a million pounds of funding as it continues with its ambitious plans for growth and job creation, attracting the best legal talent to its team.
Following on from its announcement earlier this year that it had taken sole occupation of 10,000 sq ft at its base in Aykley Heads, Durham, Swinburne Maddison LLP has entered the next exciting phase of its development. The law firm, which was voted ‘Law Firm of the Year (6+ partners)’ and ‘Team of the Year – Litigation and Dispute Resolution’ in this year’s Northern Law Awards, revealed that all the finance raised will be used to carry out a total transformation of the two-storey building to better reflect its growing stature as Durham City’s pre-eminent, full-service law firm.
The firm’s strategy is to offer cost effective solutions to businesses and individuals in County Durham and further afield without compromising the quality expected from a leading regional law firm.
Working with local contractor, AMH Interiors, the brief has been very specific in seeking to achieve the desired ambience. The resulting refurbishment has been designed to both increase the quality of service to clients and create a modern contemporary working environment reflective of the high level of service clients receive from Swinburne Maddison’s growing team yet with the feel of a top tier national firm.
Commencing mid-October, although it will be business as usual, the work is not expected to complete until the end of January.
During the refurbishment, AMH will remodel the building, creating vibrant open plan office spaces, a relaxing staff and client lounge, serviced meeting rooms, and an impressively redesigned reception area as well as improved service facilities.
The exciting development plans are also intended to underpin Swinburne Maddison’s ongoing recruitment campaign as it seeks to attract the best legal talent to County Durham. The firm currently has plans to appoint a further four qualified lawyers and an additional two trainees in the early part of next year. Speaking about this latest phase of investment, Jonathan Moreland, partner and head of the dispute resolution team, said:
“Until now, whilst extremely functional, our offices perhaps didn’t reflect the firm that we have become and the quality of work that we handle, which is why we have decided to undertake a complete refurbishment and modernisation of the building, to create contemporary offices and a stylish environment for the benefit of both staff and clients.

Whilst work is ongoing at the Aykley Heads site Swinburne Maddison is also working on a new communications strategy which is due to be released and coincide with the completion of the refurbishment.
