Ouseburn Farm’s preloved furniture warehouse has almost doubled in size in response to demand for upcycled furniture.
The warehouse, on Wilfred Street in Byker, renovates and recycles old furniture donated by the public, with all funds raised being re-invested into the Farm as well as providing funds for a workshop project, ran from the warehouse.
The workshop provides an educational route or work experience to vulnerable adults teaching them essential skills and provides placements for the homeless and adults with learning difficulties and mental health problems.
The increase in demand for unique, one off pieces of furniture meant the warehouse needed to expand in order to have more room to display items and have space to be able to take more donations.
The works included the demolition of a disused shower and toilet block from the building next door to create the extra space but now, after a lot of hard work from builders and warehouse volunteers, the renovation is complete.
As well as taking donations, the warehouse also offers a unique service where customers can commission a skilled carpenter to turn a sketch or an idea into a bespoke piece of furniture.
Speaking about the expansion, team leader Angela Bateman, said: “We have noticed an increase in demand for unusual pieces of upcycled furniture so we needed to increase the space of the warehouse.
“Even in the short space of time since the expansion has been complete, we have noticed a difference, the warehouse looks more inviting and it’s much easier to display the unusual, beautiful furniture we have in store.
“The extra space also means we can take in more donations and raise additional funds – this is a crucial part of the Farm’s funding, the more funding we get, more people can gain experience through our workshop project, helping them to secure employment in the future.
“We take furniture in all kinds of conditions, we like to give older pieces some tender love and care and give them a new lease of life. We have an unusual piece at the moment, a table where the base is made from an old bike, it’s great.”
Furniture can be donated to the warehouse by members of the public, either by dropping items at the warehouse or arranging a free pick up.

Any donated soft furnishings must have fire safety labels and be in good condition.
