Totally Locally Durham has teamed up with Durham BID and Durham Markets Company to celebrate the city’s many independent businesses with the return of  the Totally Locally Fiver Fest!

Independent businesses in the city are invited to join the campaign.  The Fiver Fest will run from Friday 30th June to Monday 3rd July, launching Durham Business Improvement District’s (Durham BID) Independents InDurham week (which runs until Friday 7th July).  The Fiver Fest promotes offers for a ‘fiver’ or multiples thereof, £5 discounts and other special deals, encouraging shoppers to visit and support as many of the city’s independent businesses as possible.

Colin Wilkes, Managing Director of Durham Markets Company which launched Totally Locally Durham, commented:  “Independent businesses are vital to our city.  They make our retail district different from every other high street.  Totally Locally Durham is about our independent businesses working together, supporting and promoting one another.

“We’ll have lots of social media activity, as well as advertising, leaflets and posters to encourage shoppers to make the most of the Fiver Fest.  The best advice we can give is to look out for the posters at participating businesses, pop in and ask ‘What’s your Fiver Fest offer?’  We hope that locals will discover independent businesses that they’ve not used before, and that they’ll tell their friends and family about them, and help spread the word.  After all, every penny spent with local independent businesses is helping our local economy, and that’s important for all of us.

“Did you know that if every household within the DH1 postcode were to spend just £5 each with local independent businesses, it would put a staggering £4.6 million into the local economy?”

Adam Deathe, business engagement manager at Durham BID, said: “We’re really pleased to be able to support Durham Markets and its Totally Locally initiative as part of Independents InDurham.  It’s a week-long celebration of all the independent businesses calling Durham City their home.  After all, they’re what make our high street different from any other.

“We’re particularly keen for BID businesses to get involved and make the most of this exciting opportunity.  If you’re an independent business, get in touch with the BID or Durham Markets to register your interest.  If you’re a business that is part of a national chain, please do help to support the scheme for the sake of your neighbours – a healthy high street is important for all of our future economic success.  And if you live locally, don’t forget to do your bit and shop locally, especially during Independents InDurham, to help other people living in the region make a success of their business in the City too.”

There is still time for independent businesses in Durham to sign up to participate in the Fiver Fest, and any business wishing to be involved should email Colin Wilkes, colin@durhammarkets.co.uk.
