Screen Shot 2015-10-14 at 10.49.43Thousands of flowers will burst into bloom across Durham thanks to a city centre partnership.

Durham City Homes, as part of County Durham Housing Group is working  with Durham County Council and 13 local schools to plant 64,000 bulbs across 14 estates in preparation for next spring.

With the help of more than  2,140 school children, a mixture of crocuses, tulips and other ‘bee friendly’ bulbs will be planted, to provide a much needed supply of pollen and nectar for bumblebees as they emerge from winter hibernation.

Jean Steel, Durham City Homes’ Involvement Team Leader, said: “It’s been fantastic to work with the local community on this project, with the children keen to get outdoors and get their hands dirty.

“Not only have they learned about the environment, but the project will also help to build pride in the community at the same time.”

The bulb planting is part of a ‘Neighbourhood Pride’ initiative, which aims to enhance the appearance of estates by working with the local community.
