Young people from Ashington successfully took part in the £100 challenge to convert £100 into profit while raising money to help improve services for young adults in the area.

Groups of young people across Northumberland including the Northumberland County Council Youth Service, Bad Apples, Calmer Therapy, YMCA Northumberland, Teen Bar, Ashington High School and Northumberland Church of England Academy Sixth Form took part in the £100 challenge which asks groups of young people to apply for £100, which they are then encouraged to use to generate enterprising projects turning their initial £100 into profit.

The focus on this years’ challenge was to create and sell a product at Ashington Youth Market. This encouraged the participants to identify a product they knew would sell, determine how to make it and also consider pricing and marketing to encourage their sales to flourish.

The young people created a range of items to sell on their stalls, including bath bombs, soaps, mugs, crepes, cakes and chutneys and was very successful in generating a profit to be used on local services for youths. The money raised was used in different ways including, continuing the enterprise, buying equipment and to pay for a trip for the young people.

Following the success of this event, several groups said they would be looking to work on the forth coming markets and continue to raise money for their groups.

Cath McEvoy, Children’s Service Director at Northumberland County Council: “This was a great event which allowed the participating groups to get really creative about generating products that would sell, developing creative and entrepreneurial skills. The results of the sales were fantastic and each participating group should be very proud of their effort and contribution.”
