Entrepreneur Launches Innovative Gluten-Free Brewing Company in North East

A North East entrepreneur has launched, Autumn Brewing Co., a new brewing company dedicated to producing high quality gluten-free beers and lagers, and is the first such company to have all its beers and lagers brewed in the UK using only naturally gluten-free grains and brewing malts.

Based in the region, Autumn Brewing Co. is the brainchild of Peter Briggs who was inspired to take on this new challenge after a friend was diagnosed as Coeliac.

Autumn Brewing Co. has today (February 27) announced the launch of its first commercial brews as part of its ALTernative BREWing range: ALT BREW NO.01 Bavarian Style Pilsner and ALT BREW NO.02 English Pale Ale.

As well as being a great choice for those who suffer from Coeliac Disease, the ALT BREW range offers beer drinkers an alternative to mainstream barley based beers.

Commenting on the launch, Peter Briggs, founder of Autumn Brewing Co. said:  “After two years of research, training and many small scale trial brews using different combinations of naturally gluten-free grains, we are proud to have created ALT BREW, our first range of great tasting gluten-free beers.

“The range is now available to purchase and the feedback we’ve had so far has been great. For those who follow a gluten-free diet, out of necessity or choice, finding high quality, great tasting gluten-free beers brewed from naturally gluten-free ingredients, is a real joy.”

All Autumn Brewing Co,’s beers and lagers are certified through the Coeliac UK Crossed Grain Symbol scheme. This is the industry recognised certification scheme for people diagnosed with Coeliac Disease or who are sensitive to gluten. To give drinkers extra peace of mind, every batch of beer brewed is tested by a United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accredited laboratory, to make sure it is below the recognised gluten-free standard of 20 parts per million (ppm) before being sold.

Coeliac Disease is a lifelong autoimmune disease caused by a reaction to gluten. It affects at least one in 100 people, however, according to Coeliac UK, the oldest and largest coeliac charity in the world, only 24% of sufferers have been clinically diagnosed. Sufferers of the disease are advised to avoid food and drink which contains barley, wheat or rye as an ingredient – including the majority of beers and lagers.

The ALT BREW range uses alternative brewing grains; rice, millet and quinoa in the brewing of its gluten-free beers. The range currently consists of ALT BREW NO.01 Bavarian Style Pilsner, which has been shortlisted for a gluten-free beer award in the FreeFrom Food Awards 2017, and ALT BREW NO.02 English Pale Ale. There are plans to add to the range in the coming months.

Mr Briggs continued: “As well as offering a range of high quality, and flavoursome, beers which are suitable for people who observe a gluten-free diet, we give all beer drinkers a great alternative to the barley and wheat based beers currently available in the mainstream UK beer market.

“We’re excited to bring these brands to the market and are looking to grow the number of retail outlets across both the on and off trade, whilst further developing the business. The fact that ALT BREW NO.01 Bavarian Style Pilsner has already been shortlisted in the FreeFrom Food Awards 2017 is a huge compliment and we’re really looking forward to seeing what the future holds for us.”

ALT BREW NO.01 Bavarian Style Pilsner and ALT BREW NO.02 English Pale Ale are currently available from Coppers At Gosforth,  The Black Horse, Low Fell, The Lions Den, Yarm, The Vaults in Devizes, Wiltshire, The Catherine Wheel, Newbury online at The Gluten Free Beer Store and a roll out to On trade and Off trade retail outlets, locally, regionally and nationally, begins from today (February 27 2017).
