FAMILIES and individuals wishing to take part in the North East’s biggest Community Carnival can get creative at two free costume making workshops this month.

The artistic workshops for families will take place on Saturday 18 July at Spark, Bishopton Road West, Stockton TS19 0QH.

There will be a choice of two workshops, one from 10am to 12pm and a second workshop from 2pm to 4pm.

This year the Carnival theme is Instant Light, inspired by the story of the same name commissioned from Sara Maitland. Those taking part in the Carnival will be asked to make costumes which reflect the magical tale of how Stockton became a festival town.

Families taking part in the workshops will be working with a professional artist to construct their costumes and bring the Instant Light story to life.

Stockton’s annual Community Carnival will take place on Saturday 1 August during Stockton International Riverside Festival (SIRF). So far hundreds of people have signed up to take part in the Carnival and group workshops have now started to help them prepare for the community celebration.

Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Norma Wilburn, said: “The Carnival is Stockton’s largest community celebration and a brilliant occasion for people to come together and take part in the parade. These free workshops are a great opportunity for residents young and old to create some fantastic costumes fitting the magical Instant Light theme for the Carnival on 1 August.”

The workshops are for all parents/guardians and their children.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.

To reserve a place on either workshop please contact Lyndsey Stephenson on 01642 527696 or emaillyndsey.stephenson@stockton.gov.uk
