EVERYONE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY to get active together outdoors with the Active Sunderland BIG 3K Run – Sunday 13 May.

The popular annual event, a 3K run along parts of the city centre course for the Siglion Sunderland City 10K and Half Marathon which follow, is designed to appeal to family and fun runners keen to share the big race atmosphere and experience of the day.

Sunderland City Council Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, Councillor John Kelly said: “The Active Sunderland Big 3K Run is especially suitable for families and beginner runners over the age of five.

“The emphasis is very much on having a fun experience, this is a great way for young children and their parents to join in and enjoy a great experience in the city, it really is the perfect way to have a healthy day out with friends or family.”

Preparing to join many fun runners taking part on the day, are a group of runners from Dame Dorothy Primary School in Dock Street who are currently in training for the event.

The children and members of staff at the school are using the school’s improved outdoor ‘Path to Wellness’ an outdoor all-weather track around the perimeter of the school field. The track was funded by the Tesco ‘Bags for Health’ campaign and was installed to encourage the children to be fit and active, and has resulted in the development of the school running group.

Premises Manager for Dame Dorothy School, Gary Byers said: “The Active Sunderland BIG 3K is our first organised run which is something the children are very excited about. It is a great opportunity for them to experience running in the city centre event.

“They are thrilled to have the chance be part of the Run Sunderland Festival, and asking we will be there, will you?”

Tchoui Haggar and Kai Robson aged 9 are two of the children currently part of the group training for the run.

Tchoui said:  I feel special that I can run 3k and I am really looking forward to it. This will be my first road race.”

Kai added: “I really enjoy keeping fit and I’m excited about running the 3k as part of the school team.”

The BIG 3K Run offers everyone the opportunity to take part in a great programme of runs in the city over the day , and is suitable for people of all abilities including children aged 5 years and over.

The Active Sunderland BIG 3K will use the same start and finish line, and takes place on part of the same city centre closed road course, as the Siglion Sunderland City 10k and Half Marathon.

Entry is only £10 per person and includes an Active Sunderland BIG Events technical t-shirt, medal and a goody bag. Entries are open until Monday 7 May!
