STOCKTON Town Centre is preparing itself for a big day of gigantic celebrations to mark the completion of its new look High Street.
Anyone who visits Stockton Town Centre this week would be forgiven if they thought they had stepped into the land of the giants.
On Saturday (21 March), Leader of Stockton Council, Councillor Bob Cook and the Mayor of Stockton, Councillor Barbara Inman will officially open the new central garden following a large scale theatrical performance involving a massive giant and an eight metre wide eagle.
An enormous chair has already been placed on top of the plinth in Stockton Town Centre ready for the arrival of the town’s very own giant.
Councillor Cook, said: “Stockton Town Centre has been radically transformed throughout the last two years, making it a much more attractive, welcoming and enticing place to visit.
“The new spaces which have been created make it a perfect venue to host large scale, nationally and internationally acclaimed events and this Saturday’s celebrations will be just a small taster of things to come.”
At 1pm visitors will see first-hand the scale of events the High Street can now host thanks to its multi-million pound transformation. An intriguing and spectacular performance by Spanish Theatre Company Carros de Foc will write a new story for Stockton Town Centre, bringing a giant to the High Street and revealing the magic of the new space.
During the breath-taking performance the huge, majestic eagle will fly across the town centre while young people from Heritage Dance Studio perform in the central area before the eagle swoops down to reveal the stunning new water feature in its garden like setting.
The giant’s voice is being recorded by North-East born actor, Bill Fellows, who is most recently known for his roles in Wolfblood and Broadchurch.
Councillor Cook added: “I would urge everyone living in and around Stockton to visit the town on Saturday for an unforgettable experience. The performance by Carros de Foc promises to be truly spectacular and one not to miss.”
The extraordinary show will be the highlight of a fun-filled celebration event which is being held on the rejuvenated High Street between 10am and 3pm.
Throughout the day families are invited to an action-packed activity marquee on the High Street car park where they can take part in a whole host of arts and crafts, fun sports and storytelling.
Wags and Whiskers pet boutique will also be hosting a dog show at 11am in Wellington Square, there will be plenty of live music to enjoy both on the High Street and in Green Dragon Yard from 12pm and Welly the Elephant will be making special visits to the Town Centre throughout the day.
Parking will be free in Wellington Square, the Castlegate Centre and in all Stockton Council owned car parks all day from 10am.
