redcar council largeRESIDENTS across Redcar and Cleveland are being encouraged to hit the paths and trails as part of a Public Health England fitness campaign.

Throughout the month of September, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council will be working with community groups and leisure provider Everyone Active to get people running across the borough.

To help residents get their running legs in gear, there will be a number of courses available to everyone from complete beginners to those wanting to run longer distances.

With everything from couch-to-parkrun courses, progression to 5 kilometre courses, and a ‘Mums on the Run’ course for mothers to build up their running abilities while pushing their pram or buggy, there is something for everyone.

Younger runners will also be catered for with the official launch of the junior parkrun at Locke Park onSunday 18 September. The 2 kilometre routes are designed for four to 14-year-olds looking to run on a regular basis.

The highlight of the running month however, is the 34th Redcar Half Marathon which takes place onSunday 25 September. The 13 mile race will take on Redcar seafront and will be the perfect way to put all that training to good use. For runners looking for a shorter distance, there is the Beacon 5 kilometre run and the one kilometre Ineos Go Run for Fun.

Entries for all the runs close on Wednesday 21 September, with more information available at:www.hm.nmhraces.net.

Cllr Lynn Pallister, Cabinet Member for Health & Housing, said: “All these training courses and initiatives are the perfect start for anyone who has been thinking of taking up running. The support available from partners such as Everyone Active and the New Marske Harriers should encourage even the newest runners to get out there and run with confidence.”
