Good Samaritan School Children to be Special Guests at Queen’s Birthday Celebration

logo-landscapePUPILS from a Stockton Borough school are being thanked for their efforts to make a difference to their community.

Year Five children from Fairfield Primary School will be among the many community stalwarts, charities and carers served afternoon tea on Stockton High Street during a celebration on Sunday (12 June) to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

There will also be picnic benches available for anyone who wants to bring along food and join the party which is being held on the same afternoon as the Patron’s Lunch on The Mall in London.

As part of the Archbishop of York’s Young Leader’s Award, the 55 youngsters have all been involved in a whole host of fundraising and volunteering to help others including:

  • Raising nearly £500 by organising a whole school competition to dress up and sell cakes for Children in Need
  • Organising and hosting a Christmas party for elderly residents of Welburn House Care Home
  • Participating in the Big Tidy Up
  • Raising more than £450 for the British Heart Foundation
  • Raising more than £200 by taking part in the Sponsored Leap for Sport Relief
  • Arranging and participating in a Year 5 Race for Life (41 laps round the school field!)

All of the young people have also carried out their own individual activities to make a difference, ranging from having their long hair cut short to raise money for the Little Princess Trust to helping with household chores and selling bookmarks for charity.

Headteacher of Fairfield Primary School, Judith Harrison, added: “I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the children’s amazing involvement in many worthwhile causes.

“I’ve been so impressed with their enthusiasm and creativity in making a difference and I’m sure the Queen would also approve!”

The highlight of the day will be the launch of the Stockton Flyer, a large industrial looking contraption, from the plinth on the High Street.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Norma Wilburn, said: “These young people are fantastic ambassadors of Stockton Borough and deserve to be thanked and recognised for all they have done to help others.

“This Royal celebration event is a perfect opportunity to do just that.  I hope they, along with many other unsung heroes who have been invited for afternoon tea, thoroughly enjoy themselves.

“With the exciting unveiling of the Stockton Flyer as well as an array of activities there will really be something for all the family to enjoy so I urge everyone living in and around Stockton to come to the town centre to be part of this very special day.”

Crowds lining the High Street will be asked to wave green flags to signal the machinery to whir into action ahead of a golden lever being released to bring the Flyer whistling and steaming from the plinth.

The whimsical mechanical structure will rumble gradually into life for the very first time at around 1pm.

There will also be a host of free family fun including a dog show, a Victorian fairground, a traditional tea dance, Lego workshops, balloon making and street theatre which will take place between 10.30am and 4pm.
