The Hallé makes a splash in Darlington

Screen Shot 2016-05-05 at 11.54.39Tickets have now gone on sale for a special performance by one of the UK’s top symphonic ensembles in the town’s Dolphin Centre next month (June).

The Hallé Orchestra, now in its 158th season, boasts a distinguished history of acclaimed performances around the world; award-winning recordings, radio broadcasts and educational outreach programmes.

The gala evening on Thursday, 23 June will see the orchestra transport its audience to Broadway and Hollywood with a musical programme that includes two works by Leonard Bernstein – Candide from the Operetta Candide and Mambo from West Side Story – and music from Star Wars by John Williams. Another highlight will be a performance of the classic Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber.

Supported by Hummersknott Academy Trust, the performance will celebrate the three-year partnership between Durham Music Service (Durham and Darlington Music Hub) and the orchestra.

The orchestra will also be hosting a series of workshops with local schools and on the day of the concert there will be an afternoon performance with 650 pupils from Darlington primary schools that will also be streamed live to local schools.

The events have been supported by local businesses and cultural organisations, including Creative Darlington, Darlington Building Society and Arts Council England.

Stephen Wiper, Creative Darlington Manager, said:

“It’s a real coup for us to be able to welcome the Hallé Orchestra to Darlington and we’re thrilled that it also offers a chance for local youngsters to take part in the musical workshops.”

Ian Robinson, Deputy Head of Service at Durham Music Service, added:

“This is a great opportunity for both school children and the general public in Darlington to see and hear one of the world’s great orchestras.  The children will also be taking their instruments to the school’s concert and perform with the orchestra!”

The concert takes place at the Dolphin Centre on Thursday, 23 June starting at 7.30pm and tickets, price £10 and £5 concessions, are available from the Dolphin Centre on 01325 406600 or www.healthydarlington.co.uk/dolphinevents.
