North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

NewcastleGateshead Initiative has announced that Heart North East will once again be helping people celebrate New Year in Newcastle after being named official media partner of the New Year’s Eve Winter Carnival.

The successful partnership with event organisers NewcastleGateshead Initiative is now in its second year.

Heart North East Drivetime presenter Tom Campbell will be entertaining the crowds as part of the early evening celebrations, which includes the Winter Carnival parade and firework finale at Newcastle Civic Centre.

Tom said: “It’s an honour to host the Winter Carnival. I’m really looking forward to kick-starting the New Year celebrations. It’s a great tradition in the city and I can’t wait to see everyone there!”

NewcastleGateshead Initiative’s New Year’s Eve Winter Carnival is one of the biggest New Year events in the country, attracting up to 40,000 visitors every year.

Revellers can join the early evening family celebrations in the city centre as ghoulish creatures from land, sea and the depths of the underworld inhabit the dark streets around Monument. The mystical Baba Yaga will lead her entourage of puppets, street bands and local community groups along Northumberland Street to Newcastle Civic Centre for a spectacular firework display set to music.

The approximate timings for the New Year’s Eve Winter Carnival parade are:

From 16:30:    Music and carnival starts to gather at Monument (Nelson Street)

From 17:20:   Parade leaves for Newcastle Civic Centre via Northumberland Street.

From 18:10:   Fireworks finale at Newcastle Civic Centre.

Carol Bell, culture and major events director at NewcastleGateshead Initiative said: “Heart North East were hugely popular with revellers last year and we’re delighted to be working with the team again in 2016. They bring so much energy and enthusiasm.

“I have no doubt Tom will have everyone smiling and dancing as we welcome in the New Year.”

In addition to the early evening celebrations, revellers celebrating New Year’s Eve in Newcastle City Centre will once again be treated to a short midnight firework display at the quayside. Themidnight display is made possible thanks to the support of local quayside businesses.
