ONE of the region’s engineering marvels is throwing open its doors at the weekend as part of the national Heritage Open Days initiative.

Visitors are invited to find out about the iconic Transporter Bridge, from its rich history to the stunning views from its upper walkway.

The Bridge celebrated its centenary in 2011, and a major £2.6 million overhaul thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund has enhanced its role as a key regional leisure and heritage destination.

On Saturday, September 10, there will be a chance for visitors to try the new glass viewing lift – while the more energetic will be invited to climb the bridge’s 210 steps to enjoy the view from 160ft above the River Tees. There will also be an opportunity for visitors to cross on the gondola (charges apply), whilst refreshments and Transporter merchandise will be available to purchase from the recently renovated Transporter Bridge Visitor Centre.

All event activity is subject to suitable weather conditions and visitors are encouraged to contact bridge staff in advance if in doubt.

Advance booking is essential – contact Bridge Master John Ivison on 01642 727265 or email transporterbridge@middlesbrough.gov.uk
