Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

High profile event discusses the future of UK post-Brexit

Learning Curve Group, one of the UK’s leading training providers, has hosted a high profile event, which outlined the challenges and opportunities surrounding Brexit including the need to develop a skilled workforce for a new economic landscape.

The North East-based company, which specialises in education and training for further education providers and employers, held the exclusive lunch in association with HSBC.

Hosted by Deputy Chair of the Entrepreneurs’ Forum, Graham Robb, the event was held for business leaders of organisations of more than 150 employees at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts in Gateshead.

During the lunch, Mark Berrisford-Smith, Head of Economics at HSBC UK Commercial Banking, shared his insight into the possible conditions of the economy post Brexit. Among his discussion with guests was the issues surrounding exporting, whether the UK will stay in a Customs Union and the implications of operating within World Trade Organisations rules.

A presentation on the potential changes to the skills agenda was also given by Jon Cummins, Commercial Director at Learning Curve Group. He highlighted key sectors, such as health and social care, hospitality and construction that may be impacted by Brexit and what employers need to do to prepare for potential changes to immigration that will restrict employment from the continent.

Jon Cummins said: “This event was a good opportunity to discuss the economic and, in particular, the skills issues facing employers as we countdown the final months before the UK exits the European Union. Building upon our established reputation to ensure the UK can trade with and compete with other countries can only happen if we develop a skilled workforce and we are working with a growing number of employers to ensure they are well-positioned to grow in the future.”

Brenda McLeish, Chief Executive of Learning Curve Group, said: “Mark Berrisford-Smith gave our guests his insight into the issues surrounding Brexit, which proved to be really valuable. On occasions the Brexit debate is sometimes centered on the South East of the country so it was really important to get such a respected economist to the North East to not only share his views, but gain an understanding of what is happening from important businesses in our region.”

Learning Curve Group offers a wide range of courses for employers looking to increase the skills of their employees, often through dedicated websites accessible from any location. It has also become a primary source of support and information for businesses accessing the Apprenticeship Levy.

The benefits to businesses include maximising workforce efficiency, boosting business productivity and ensuring the availability of a new generation of skilled employees.
