CARE home manager Kate Charlton braved the shave to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Kate went under the shears in support of her mother, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2017, but is now on the road to recovery.

She was joined by her partner, Karen Tighe, as the pair had their hair shaved off at The Gables Care Home, in Middlesbrough.

So far, they have raised over £300 from the event, but they are expecting to exceed their target of £400.

Kate has worked at The Gables, on Highfield Road, since 2011 and was promoted to home manager earlier this year.

She said: “I was inspired to do this for Macmillan as my mum was diagnosed with cancer last year. It’s been a long road to recovery but she is doing really well now.”

Karen added: “I wanted to take part to support Kate.”

The home’s activities coordinator, Emma Myers, was a qualified hairdresser before moving into the care sector. She was asked to wield the shears for the event.

She said: “It is a fantastic thing to do for a great cause. Both Kate and Karen were great sports.”

Maintenance man Chris Daggett said: “Kate suits the new haircut.”

Resident Jean Polano was one of those who gathered round to watch the head shave. She said: “I’m glad it wasn’t me. My hair is really long.”

The Gables Care Home also held a coffee morning event during Macmillan’s nationwide World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, raising over £40 for the charity.
