Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

A NORTH East hotel employee is heading to the Big Apple after being awarded a prestigious scholarship to a world famous university.

Lottie Haylock, accommodations and commercial manager for Newcastle-based The Malhotra Group plc, has been awarded one of just two UK scholarships to study at the prestigious Cornell University, New York.

Formerly general manager of Newcastle’s Grey Street Hotel she joined the family run Malhotra Group plc in June 2013 when it added the venue to its extensive portfolio of hotels and leisure outlets.

And when she takes her place on the Professional Development Programme in summer 2017, it will be alongside hotel and leisure industry staff from across the globe.

The scholarship, organised and part funded by Master Innholders, received a record number of applicants this year and Lottie, 38, from Newcastle, said: “There were only two scholarship places awarded for my course in the UK and I’m overjoyed to have been chosen.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to develop my skills in a country renowned for its exceptional level of hospitality, alongside the best in the industry.”

During the two-week programme, Lottie will complete courses in Strategic Hospitality Management, Essential Skills for Leadership, New Media in Hospitality Marketing and Demand Management: Maximising Hotel Revenue through Distribution Channels.

Stuart Bowery FIH MI, chairman of the Master Innholders, said: “The quality and breadth of this year’s applicants has been outstanding and we are delighted that 70 per cent of this year’s intake is from independent hotels.

Atul Malhotra, operations director at Malhotra Group plc said: “Lottie should be incredibly proud of herself in securing one of the most sought after opportunities in the industry.

“This opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time as the Group is currently undertaking a large-scale refurbishment of the Grey Street hotel with the re-development of The Three Mile Inn Hotel, at Gosforth, scheduled for next year.

“She is absolutely deserving of this place and I am sure she will have a fabulous time in New York.”
