WESTWAY Veterinary Group is hoping to take advantage of the findings of a new survey revealing Newcastle is the best place in Britain to raise a family.

Good schools, buzzing nightlife, low crime rate and affordable houses make Newcastle ideal for bringing up a family, according to a survey by MoneySuperMarket.com.

The city, most famous for its Broon Ale, Ant and Dec and passionate football fans, beat off competition from 34 other places to head the UK Family Living Index for having the most family-friendly environment.

The news will come as a massive boost to businesses, hoping to attract new staff to come and work in the North East.

Westway Vets, which is looking to appoint vets for its state-of-the-art veterinary hospital in West Road, Newcastle, hopes news of the city’s success will boost the number of applications.

Managing Director Jason Atherton said: “Newcastle is an amazing city to live and work so we’re not really surprised at the findings of this survey.

“Newcastle isn’t just appealing to people with families, it is a great, vibrant city for all generations, including young single people with the shopping and nightlife.

“Within just 15 minutes, you can have access to gorgeous beaches, shopping, lovely restaurants and bars, beautiful countryside, with good train and motorway links and airports.”

Westway Vets currently employs 35 vets, 52 veterinary nurses and a further 61 receptionists and admin staff across its 21 branches, making it the North East’s biggest veterinary group.

They are looking to appoint two additional vets to work in their main branch in Newcastle, as well as branch surgeries.

Westway, which also has the Value Vets chain, is part of the UK-wide veterinary group, VetPartners, which owns practices in England, Scotland and Wales.

Mr Atherton added: “We find that when staff come to work in Newcastle, they don’t want to leave because they love the place and the challenge of working in a big veterinary group.

“We have a team of highly talented vets, a well-equipped main hospital with a number of certificate holders, and vets can come here and grow their skills.”
