Penny Marshall, ICE Regional Director for the North East, said: “Effective investment in infrastructure can help boost economic growth across the region and the announced boost to our rail links and HS2 will help to make the Northern Powerhouse a reality.

“It is important that the North East forms a full part of the Chancellor’s plans, though, and does not fall behind other parts of the North. However, the additional funding on new projects to enhance our road network will be felt in the region, and will vastly improve connectivity, benefiting productivity and the creation of new jobs.”

In September, ICE launched a new report, Delivering a Northern Infrastructure Strategy, which highlights the need for investment to enhance connectivity, enable development and ensure that the region is ready for the arrival of HS2.

Penny was part of the expert Northern Powerhouse Steering Group that put forward the report, which includes other engineering professionals, business leaders and local government officials.
