A new specialist care home for visually impaired, older people has begun to accept registrations in the West of Scotland.

Scotland’s largest sight loss organisation, and charity for the blind – Royal Blind – is building Jenny’s Well, a care home in Paisley, Hawkhead Road. The home is scheduled to open in October.

For people with visual impairment, including those who have other medical needs such as dementia, they will be cared for in a 54-bedroom home with around the clock nursing care.

Jenny’s Well will welcome residents who are funded from both social care and privately funded means. If couples, close relatives and friends wish to move in together, only one of them needs to meet the sight loss criteria.

As a collection of four pavilions, with three residential wings and an entrance and administration pavilion, which are all connected by a cloister structure – Jenny’s Well has been constructed with care in mind. There is a safe private courtyard which links all three residential pavilions, creating a large shared space.

In times of need, there will be a private family area with a room to stay overnight, and there will also be ample parking for visiting family members.

Morag Francis, Care for Older People’s Services Manager, said: “The construction of Jenny’s Well is nearing completion and we are delighted to be opening registration for residents who require a place from October.

“A huge amount of work has gone into creating an ideal environment for our future residents. Our facilities have been specially designed with vision impairment and other disabilities and medical needs in mind, with a sensory garden, tactile signage and specialist equipment. All of our rooms will be en-suite and set up with the residents’ own preferences in mind and personalised with their own furnishings if they wish.

“Jenny’s Well is a much-needed service in Renfrewshire and we are very much looking forward to meeting our future residents.”

Jenny’s Well is Royal Blind’s first service in the West of Scotland, with the home modelled on their Edinburgh care home, Braeside House.

As well as this, the home is being built alongside a Scottish War Blinded activity hub for veterans with sight loss.
