Leading shoulder surgeon boosts Nuffield Tees Hospital orthopaedics team

The Nuffield Health Tees Hospital orthopaedics team has received a further boost with the appointment of shoulder and elbow specialist Mr Phil Holland joining its existing team of 20 consultant orthopaedic surgeons.

Specialising in shoulder and elbow keyhole surgery and joint replacement surgery, Mr Holland graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2005 and completed his surgical training in Merseyside. This included training at the world famous Wrightington Hospital and completing a Master of Science degree with Distinction at Salford University.

After receiving his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in 2015, he took a year of advanced training in shoulder arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) and shoulder arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery) with internationally renowned surgeons at South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust.

Mr Holland is a keen canoeist and a regular at the Tees Barrage International White Water Rafting Centre in Stockton. One of the main reasons he chose to focus on upper limb shoulder surgery is due to the high number of sports men and women he’s come across over the years suffering with shoulder and elbow injuries.

Mr Holland said: “My research on canoeists and kayakers has shown that with treatment most athletes, including elite athletes, can get back to the same level of sport after the treatment of even severe shoulder injuries.

“My understanding of shoulder injuries comes first hand, whether it be guiding my wife through her shoulder dislocation, advising friends on the best treatments to get back on the bike quickly after shoulder fractures cycling, or dealing with serious shoulder injuries on the scene whilst paddling white water.

“I genuinely believe that even serious shoulder injuries should be a temporary inconvenience and not a reason to take a lot of time out from your sport, hobbies or the things you love. Nuffield is home to world-class facilities which enable me to provide the best care for my patients.”

At Nuffield Health Tees Hospital in Stockton, which is rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Mr Holland specialises in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and shoulder stabilisation and also carries out joint shoulder replacement surgery and injections for frozen shoulder.

Mr Holland recently treated Alexander Buchanan, a professional motocross rider from Osmotherley, North Yorkshire, back to sport after a serious shoulder injury. He said: “I dislocated my shoulder in a motorbike accident at the end of last season. In order to get back on my bike as quickly as possible so I could continue competing at the same level, I decided to seek private treatment from Nuffield Health.

“I was treated by Mr Holland at Nuffield Health Tees Hospital. He performed keyhole surgery to stabilise my shoulder and then sent me for a course of physiotherapy to help aid my recovery. I was back on my bike within two and a half months of having the surgery and that is entirely down to Mr Holland. The treatment and care I received was absolutely brilliant and the results have been fantastic.”

In September Mr Holland is launching a new innovative clinic at Nuffield Health’s Catterick Leisure Centre to expand the services available to military personnel based in Catterick and to increase the range of shoulder services available to residents across North Yorkshire.

In 2016 Mr Holland was appointed as an NHS consultant at South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust which is one of 22 Major Trauma Centres in the UK. Within his NHS practice Mr Holland routinely treats military personnel, sports injuries and arthritic shoulder conditions and regularly receives tertiary shoulder and elbow referrals.
