North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

SUMMER comes to Sunderland city centre this week with a sandy addition to a leading shopping centre.

The Bridges’ popular indoor beach was launched yesterday and will be open daily  until Sunday 2 September, with a whole host of events planned to keep the little ones entertained during the school holidays.

On Wednesday 1 August from 10am – 2pm, youngsters at the Bridges can make the most of the Creation Station, where they can decorate cardboard sunglasses using an array of materials, make sea inspired creatures out of Play-Doh and get creative with felt tips to colour in some beach-themed sheets.

Then, on 8 August, the Creation Station is back with a nature theme, where children can use collage materials to make a bug hat and other nature-themed crafts.

Those with a lucky streak should make sure not to miss the treasure competition every Friday, where the Sunderland Empire will be giving away a family pass to see this year’s pantomime, Peter Pan.

And Superman and Supergirl will be taking a break from fighting crime to have a well-deserved visit to the beach on Wednesday 15 and 22 August from 11am – 1pm.

Andy Bradley, centre director at the Bridges, is delighted that the beach is returning to the shopping centre.

“The beach is always very popular with our shoppers and we have a really exciting summer of activities planned to keep the kids entertained while they’re not at school,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the world can’t stand still every time the sun is out, but at least this way it means you can make sure you’re not missing out and enjoy a bit of the beach in Sunderland while you shop.”

The beach is open Mon, Tues, Wed, Friday and Saturday from 10am until 4pm, 10am until 7pm on Thursdays and 11am to 4pm on Sundays.
