Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Local and national dementia charities partner to fund the first Admiral Nurse for Newcastle upon Tyne

Specialist dementia nurse to support the complex care needs of families living with dementia in the area.

Newcastle-based dementia charity, Dementia Care, is working in partnership with national charity Dementia UK to recruit an Admiral Nurse to support families caring for someone with dementia in Newcastle.

Admiral Nurses are at the forefront of dementia care and all have significant expertise and experience of working with people diagnosed with dementia.

When things become challenging or difficult, Admiral Nurses work together with families, offering them the one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions that they need.

This specialist support helps everyone in the family to live more positively with dementia in the present, and to face the challenges of tomorrow with more confidence and less fear.

The new Admiral Nurse will be part of Dementia Care’s overall care services. Dementia UK, the national charity that develops Admiral Nursing, will provide ongoing training, monitoring and governing of the service.

Dave Stevens, Dementia Care’s Chief Executive, said an Admiral Nurse would be a very welcome and important addition to its team and to the services it provides.

“They bring an additional level of expertise and specialist training, which will be of huge benefit to people with dementia and their families,” he said.

“As the North East’s leading care provider for those with dementia, we are delighted to be strengthening our team in this way.”

Dr Hilda Hayo, Chief Admiral Nurse and CEO, Dementia UK said: “The North East of England is an area that is in urgent need of Admiral Nurses and we are very pleased to be working with Dementia Care to bring Admiral Nursing to Newcastle.

“Admiral Nursing interventions have been proven to avert avoidable and costly crises and reduce hospital admissions and early residential care. Admiral Nurses also work collaboratively with health and social care professionals to share their dementia expertise and therefore improve the overall dementia care that families receive.”

This appointment has been made possible in part through support from the Northstar Foundation, a local trust that has provided 25% of the funding for the first two years. Dementia Care has committed 25% of the funding and Dementia UK 50% of the funding for the first two years.
