Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Major A1 motorway bridge demolition project awarded to PTS Demolition & Dismantling

18260A complex civil engineering demolition project has been awarded to a County Durham company to enable the upgrade of the A1 in the North East and North Yorkshire.

PTS Demolition & Dismantling will demolish and recycle eight bridges on a 12-mile stretch of road between Leeming and Barton.

The leading demolition firm, based on Hackworth Industrial Park, Shildon, has been awarded the contract to support the A1 motorway upgrade in North Yorkshire by a Carillon Morgan Sindall joint venture, the main contractor to Highways England on this project.

A team of 40 people, comprising PTS Demolition & Dismantling’s 30 employees and its trusted network of suppliers and subcontractors, will carry out the work. All waste generated during the demolition process will be recycled.

The demolition of the bridges will enable the widening of the road, which is currently the narrowest section of the A1 between London and Edinburgh, to form a three-lane motorway, replacing the existing dual carriageway.

Dave Gauja, managing director of PTS Demolition & Dismantling, said: “This significant demolition project will be the catalyst for one of the most important upgrades to the UK road network. It is an unprecedented demolition project in this region which we are well positioned to deliver in a timely, efficient and safe manner based on our team of experienced construction professionals, civil engineers and plant operators’ expertise which will also support the strict timetable of the upgrade project.

“The demolition of eight bridges in one single project is a major undertaking in terms of logistics and engineering and we are delighted to be involved in such a ground-breaking development which will dramatically improve connectivity between Scotland and the South of England.”

Possessing more than 25 years’ civil engineering and demolition experience, PTS Demolition & Dismantling specialises in demolition, asbestos removal and site clearance services, working with blue-chip companies, local authorities and the Ministry of Defence.

Mr Gauja added: “It is an exciting time for the company and the awarding of the contract highlights our reputation within the industry for providing a first class service to clients. The project will provide a welcome boost to our economy and the 60,000 plus motorists who use the A1 every day.”
