North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

For those that have recently moved house, Christmas provides the perfect time to bunker down and make a new house feel like a dream home.

With research revealing that spending a first Christmas at a property helps buyers to feel more at home, Jackie Summerfield, Managing Director of Show Business Interiors, which designed the interiors at York’s top development The Chocolate Works, has put together her top tips to help new buyers in York achieve the perfect look and feel for their new home this Christmas.

Understand your theme

A classic theme is all about taking subtle tones and making them sparkle. We’d recommend combining natural ferns and pinecones with a bit of glitz to generate a classic Christmas finish that has the wow factor, without compromising your classy finish.

 Cute touches

Get imaginative! Think about how you can incorporate a wider theme into your classic finish – for example if you live on Heather Drive, think about how you can incorporate the theme of heather into your home… when we were decorating The Chocolate Works we utilised the former factory’s iconic clock tower to help draw a parallel between our Christmas theme and the home’s own identity.

A show-stopping centerpiece

Generate an eye-catching focal point to make a real statement. Whether it’s a tree or a centerpiece on a dining room table – make sure it’s opulent, luxurious and draws on the traditional side of style. We utilised the stunning chandeliers at The Chocolate Works to create a focal point that would help pull our entire creation together – the decorations perfectly compliment the existing decor, making the whole room feel holistic and stylish.

The Christmas tree

No Christmas tree is complete without handpicked decorations. Every home has its own unique style, from the perfectly placed stylish bauble to vibrant and traditional glass ornaments. Other tips to dressing your tree include:

  1. Measure your space to get the right size tree and check your fairy lights are working before you position them onto the tree!
  2. Put the lights and tinsel on first – it’s possible to amp up the magical feel by putting two lots of Christmas lights on instead of just one!
  3. Decorate with baubles to suit your theme. If you prefer a cosy and traditional feel then go for deep reds or golds, or for a wintery feel go for decorations in blue, silver and white. Place your decorations deep onto branches as well as to the front to add depth and richness to your tree.
  4. Finish off your tree by adding a feature decoration on top. The most traditional tree toppers are either a star or an angel, but you can now find all manner of topperson the highstreet.

The main priority when decorating your home is making sure you gather the whole family, have fun and remember there isn’t a right or wrong way to decorate! New build homeowners, can take advantage of the ‘ready to move in’ homes and use their spare time to create personal style and make their house feel like a home.
