The event, now in its eighth year, also saw a Special Recognition Award given to the Boro Angels for their contribution to the night time economy.

The awards are organised by Middlesbrough Council and Cleveland Police and were once again held at Middlesbrough Town Hall.

The nationally accredited scheme, which is recognised and supported by the Home Office, aims to encourage partnership working between the licensed trade and the authorities to create a safe and enjoyable environment for their customers.

Its aim is to reduce alcohol related crime and anti-social behaviour through training and the promotion of good practice.

This year’s awards saw 19 premises gain accreditation, following a rigorous assessment of policies and procedures covering criteria such as security, safety, drugs policies and responsible alcohol retailing.

The highest scoring premises were then placed before a panel of judges who selected the following winners of each category:-

Best Venue – Tiny

Best Large Venue – Swatters Carr

Overall Winner – Swatters Carr

Other category winners on the evening were:-

Best Restaurant – Al Forno

Capital FM Listeners Choice Award – Lloyds No.1 Resolution

Teesside University Student Venue Award – The Southfield

The Boro Angels received their Special Recognition Award from Barry Coppinger, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland.

Mr Coppinger said: “The Boro Angels’ work assists the emergency services, residents and visitors to the town centre. They are great ambassadors for Middlesbrough.

“I was more than happy to recognise the hard work of these volunteers, who are out in all weathers in their own time to provide support to those in need. Having seen their dedication and commitment first hand, I think that they deserve this recognition and it is our way of saying thank you.”

Tim Hodgkinson, Middlesbrough Council’s Licensing Manager, said: “Once again we have seen a high standard in the work of licensed premises in Middlesbrough and we congratulate all the winners and accredited venues who work to make the town a safe and enjoyable place to spend an evening.”
