MTH Performing Arts Presents a Note to Myself

MIDDLESBROUGH Town Hall’s popular Saturday Performing Arts class is about to take to the stage with a brand new show created by the students themselves on Monday, July 17 and Tuesday, July 18 at Middlesbrough Theatre.

A Note To Myself includes some moving letters to students’ future selves as well as reflections on growing up, all told through scripts, dance and stomping musical numbers.

The group, made up of six- to 18-year-olds has been working since January on the piece, which takes its inspiration from a mixture of ‘Dear Diary’ books and similar shows.

Middlesbrough Town Hall Performing Arts has always offered students a unique opportunity to work, develop and increase skills in acting, voice work, singing, dancing and movement in the heart of Middlesbrough.

As always though the team behind the group like to try to help the students achieve and excel in as many different ways as possible, this year challenging them to create their own scripts, letters and even songs.

In the past the students have had a fantastic range of opportunities to take part in some memorable experiences such as parades, showcases and wonderful summer shows which in the past have included performances of Disney’s Aladdin, Alice In Wonderland, Oliver and Annie as well as last year’s musical written especially for the group Miss Ella.

Tutors Chloe Bell, Victoria Holtom, Sarah Atkinson and David Tuffnell have a wide variety of drama school backgrounds including LAMDA, Central School of Speech and Drama, Arts Educational Schools and Italia Conti, along with teachers who work professionally throughout the North East.

Classes are led in a fun and energetic environment with a high expectation on students and staff to work hard to achieve results and do the best they can.

This group is not only a chance for children to learn new performance techniques but classes and shows build confidence, improve communication skills and give children the chance to be part of a company where they can make new friends for life.

Tutor Chloe Bell said: “The group have been growing in strength, so for the first time we really wanted to give everyone an opportunity to shine.

“They really have a wide range of interests that excel beyond singing, dancing and acting.

“We wanted to find the best way to challenge some whilst supporting others to branch out and try new things, such as creating their own scripts – and this show is most definitely a memory to treasure.”

Music tutor Victoria Holtom added: “It’s been such a joy to give students who have been attending the group for years, the chance to show what they are able to do, as well as giving some newer members a chance to step in the spotlight.

“If a student has a passion, it’s up to us to help them develop and discover more about it.”
