The Sports team at the North East’s largest Independent law firm, Muckle LLP, are celebrating after being appointed by Sport England to its exclusive National Legal Panel.
Newcastle based Muckle LLP is the only law firm in the North to be recognised for sport in the Legal 500 rankings, and joins Sport England’s exclusive list of 10 law firms authorised to provide a full legal service to over 300 national governing bodies (NGBs).
Appointed to The Legal Panel Framework, a collaboration between Sport England, Sport Wales, UK Sport and the Sport & Recreation Alliance, Muckle will continue its work supporting national governing bodies, their member leagues and affiliated clubs.
The team has advised previously on legal matters as diverse as HMRC’s consultation on the community amateur sports clubs (CASCs), the protection of sports facilities as assets of community value (ACVs) and the property, construction and tax aspects of indoor and outdoor multi-sports facilities development projects.
John Devine, Partner and Head of Sport at Muckle, said: “This is great news for our Sports team. We are all delighted to have been selected again to retain our place on the exclusive legal panel framework and continue our good work with Sport England, UK Sport and the other governing bodies
“Our continued association with Sport England and the Legal Panel Framework gives us access to over 300 NGBs and sporting organisations and will help Muckle develop further our work in the specialised areas of sports governance, regulatory compliance, community participation and sports development.”
Erin Stephens, Principal In-House Solicitor at Sport England, said: “Sport England is delighted that Muckle has been reappointed to the legal panel. The need for access to trusted advisers in the sport sector is ever increasing, and the panel provides a valued service to NGBs and sports organisations across England, Wales and for the first time, Northern Ireland.
“The mix of retained firms and new firms appointed to the panel strengthens the offering of the panel with each firm bringing a breadth of experience and specialism in areas relevant to our sector.”
Muckle has niche sector experience and long established track record advising sports clubs, from grassroots level to professional – including members of The Premier League, The Football League, Guinness Premiership and Super League. They were recently appointed by The FA to support the nationwide roll-out of their £200m Parklife facilities.
Muckle also has a growing national sports client base and reputation advising clubs at all levels on CSR, education, community, sports and recreational initiatives and also acts for individuals.
The team is led by John Devine and includes partners Tony McPhillips (employment), senior associate John Kellett (property), associates Adam Aston (construction), Richard Nixon (property) and Stephanie Coulson (commercial and regulatory), solicitors Em Love (employment) Anthony Coultas and Tom Justice (commercial and regulatory), Samantha Roberts (commercial) and Luke Donockley (commercial and employment).
