Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

National Lottery funding for North East summer holiday activities

Over £100,000 of National Lottery funding has been invested in summer holiday activities for children and young people across the North East of England.

The funding, which is made up of a number of grants under £10,000 and has been distributed by the Big Lottery Fund, will enable schools and community groups to bring children and young people together during the school holidays.

One of the groups celebrating is Children North East, whose £9,000 grant will provide young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in Newcastle upon Tyne with new experiences and opportunities. The programme of activities, which will include going to a surfing school in Tynemouth, a visit to Beamish and day trips to Flamingo Land and Edinburgh, has been shaped and designed by a group of young people.

Lynn Renwick, Young Peoples Service Manager at Children North East, said: “Thanks to the money raised by National Lottery players this brilliant scheme has been made possible. The young people we work with have been asking for support in the summer holidays and it is fantastic that we can now tell them their holiday dreams will come true!”

James Harcourt, England Grant Making Director for the Big Lottery Fund, said: “It’s fantastic to see all of the activities that will be available for children and young people from the North East. Thanks to the dedication of teachers, neighbours and inspiring people from local communities, National Lottery funding will provide fun and structure during the summer holidays, and help to make lasting memories.”

The Big Lottery Fund distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes. Last year it awarded over £164 million to projects across the UK supporting children and young people. 90% of the grants it makes are for under £10,000.
