One of the region’s leading businesses, NBS, has hosted a visit from sixth formers from the City as part of their programme of nurturing and supporting talent by working with educational establishments across the region.
NBS search for the best talent for their business but is also committed to inspiring young people from the region to reach their potential and to see the opportunities in digital businesses.
NBS is a leading global provider of construction knowledge and information management services and they invited 20, year 12 students from Benfield School to their recently refurbished £5.8million offices in Newcastle City Centre, where they employ almost 200 people.
As part of the schools ‘Careers Week’ students enjoyed a tour of the building and heard personal stories from staff of how they started their careers with NBS and how they had progressed. Pupils heard stories from Facilities Manager Carol Punton, Director of Research and Innovation Stephen Hamil and Senior BIM Author Jane Hibbert who all gave motivational speeches about the importance of hard work, finding something you are interested in and taking the opportunities in front of you.
As well having time to ask question students enjoyed lunch and were awarded certificates at the end of the day.
Karen Hall from Benfield School said, “We are very grateful to NBS for giving the students this great experience which really opened their minds to career opportunities and gave them ideas of what they might like to do in the future.”
NBS is dedicated to providing experiences and roles for the next generation. It provides a graduate programme, employs apprentices, and is a PlanBEE sponsor. Over the last six years NBS has recruited 54 roles from graduate and student placements, and don’t intend to stop there.
Helen Whitfield, chief operating officer at NBS, said “The success at NBS is down to my talented colleagues, many of which have grown and developed within the business. When we take on apprentices and graduates, we create a role for them in order to retain and develop them. We have many colleagues who started out as apprentices, who are now part of our senior team, leading their own department and contributing to the future direction of the business. We are committed to creating exciting roles and interesting careers and we need to help provide the best opportunities for our next generation. It was great to hear the ambition and aspirations of the Benfield School students”

NBS was recently announced as a new sponsor of the PlanBEE programme. Spearheaded by Gateshead College and Ryder Architecture, the scheme aims to address deep-rooted skills shortages in the built environment industry.
