North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Screen Shot 2016-03-11 at 13.59.00A CELEBRATION took place at Grangetown Youth & Community Centre on Wednesday, March 9, to mark the one year anniversary of Tiger Tots Community Daycare opening its doors.

Owner Susan Herbert opened the nursery at Grangetown Youth Centre last year to offer free childcare for two, three and four year olds

Families were invited to celebrate with a host of activities, including a bouncy castle, a chance to meet Princess Elsa, various art and crafts, and healthy eating activities. Families were also given the opportunity to look around the nursery and meet the staff.

Since opening the nursery last year, Susan has been successful in securing a tender for a second provision in Grangetown at Caedmon Primary School to provide free childcare for eligible two year olds.

The latest provision, named Tiger Cubs Community Daycare, has opened through a drive by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council to ensure there are enough places in the borough for eligible children to take up their free childcare places.

Susan’s inspiration when naming her nursery was the Youth Centre’s football and netball teams. She said: “‘The Tigers’ are a Grangetown institution and a name everyone in the local area is familiar with.

“I felt it was important to give recognition to something that is personal to the local community, and naming the nursery along the same theme was a nice way to do this, our uniforms and branding also tie in with the club colours.”

Cllr Craig Hannaway, cabinet member for children at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council said:  “Susan’s ambition to become part of the community in Grangetown has certainly been achieved by opening two day nurseries within the local community.

“The children attending the day nurseries are developing vital early learning skills to prepare them for school and their future education, and these nurseries can be a real asset for parents and families looking to use their free childcare places.”
