A new £1.8m development of affordable homes for rent is now under construction by North East landlord and developer Karbon Homes in Chester le Street using grant funding secured via the Homes and Communities Agency and support from Durham County Council.

The 17 family homes are being constructed on three neighbouring sites within South Pelaw to the west of Chester le Street town centre, on sites formerly accommodating under-utilised garages.  These new homes have been designed by Michael Dyson Associates and the main contractor for the site is Keepmoat Regeneration, part of the ENGIE Group.

Karbon Homes was formed in April this year from the merger of Cestria Community Housing, Isos Housing and Derwentside Homes. The company aims to build 2,500 new homes over the next four years.

Zoey Hawthorne, Assistant Director of Development and Property at Karbon Homes, said: “It’s great to get started on this new project, as we know there is strong demand for this type of property in the Chester le Street area.

“The delivery of these high quality affordable rented homes will help improve the quality of environment of the neighbourhood by enabling under utilised garages and land to be brought back into effective use to provide 17 new family homes that will offer a greater choice for customers wishing to live within South Pelaw.”

Lee Francis, Area Director in the North East for Keepmoat Regeneration, said: “We are proud to be working in partnership with Karbon Homes on this scheme.

“As a market leader in community regeneration, we bring significant experience to this project which will enhance the community, creating homes where people want to live.”

The developments in South Pelaw form a part of Karbon Homes’ regionwide development programme which plans to build around 2,500 homes over the next four years – making them one of the biggest developing landlords in the North East

In the Chester-le-Street area alone, Karbon Homes has recently completed 37 new homes in Pelton and has a further 22 affordable rented homes are under construction in the centre of Chester le Street with a further 19 affordable rented homes in Nettlesworth.
