A redundant barn located within the Howardian Hills has been transformed into a comfortable family home – and has picked up a prestigious Building Excellence Award along the way.
Pigeon Cote Barn is located in the centre of the village of Welburn and is one of a number of buildings that are part of the Heritage ‘Group Listing’ applied to the Temperance Court area.
The existing building comprised stone walls and clay pantile roof, with a single storey wrap around lean-to machinery shed and a steel portal frame to the front.
The proposal involved demolition of this lean-to and the portal frame and the building of a new single storey green oak framed extension on the same footprint.
This extension increased the area of usable living accommodation, whilst retaining existing openings within the barn and the character of the barn itself.
Local companies were championed throughout these works with the appointment of architects Bramhall Blenkharn and builders Dane Developments, both from the Malton area. The green oak frame was designed and constructed by Parker Oak of Thirsk with only the zinc roofing by JTC Roofing of Leicester coming from further afield.
The scheme won in the Best refurbishment or extension of a Listed Building category at the 2015 LABC North and East Yorkshire Building Excellence Awards.

“Every care has been taken to ensure that the building has retained its original charm in its new life as a home, with great attention to detail paid at every stage.”
