Seal – The Standards Tour plus special guests

Backed by a big band, multi-award winning star Seal will be performing songs from the new album, Standards, alongside his classic hits, including Killer and Kiss from a Rose.

In a career spanning three decades, racking up more than 30 million records sales worldwide and a string of Grammy, Brit and Ivor Novello awards along the way, Seal continues to shine as one of the world’s brightest music stars.

Standards brings the glamour of Old Hollywood straight to the present. It is a natural successor to his series of soul records, made a decade ago which sold over 5 million copies around the world. Standards hears Seal’s signature, velvety warm vocals bring to life classics made popular by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nina Simone. Elsewhere, there are lush orchestral moments captured on Charlie Chaplin‘s Smile and the Cole Porter gem, Love For Sale.

Fisherman’s Friends

Saturday 17 March 2018, 8pm, Sage One

Bound together by lifelong friendship and shared experience for more than 25 years, the Fisherman’s Friends have met on the Platt (harbour) in their native Port Isaac to raise money for charity, singing the traditional songs of the sea handed down to them by their forefathers.

In 2010 they signed a major record deal and their album Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends went gold as they became the first traditional folk act to land a UK top ten album. Since then they’ve been the subject of an ITV documentary, released the hit albums One and All and Proper Joband played to hundreds of thousands of fans at home and abroad.

The Fisherman’s Friends have been widely credited with starting the revival of interest in shanty-style choral singing but a cornerstone of their success has been their constantly evolving and expanding repertoire.

Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker

Friday 30 March 2018, 7.45pm, Northern Rock Foundation Hall

With the release of Overnight, Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker have brought us an album of wonder and depth. The classic quality of these songs, the meticulous beauty of the arrangements, the blanket-warm production and perfect pairing of exquisite vocals and virtuosic guitar is the culmination of everything these idiosyncratically talented musicians have been working towards since they first met.

Despite being entirely self-financed, self-produced, self-arranged and released on the Folk Room label they co-run, Nothing Can Bring Back The Hour brought Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker an extraordinary and unexpected amount of attention. They won Best Duo at the 2015 BBC Folk Awards – a major achievement at any stage of an artist’s career.

While much of their music is characterised by lush chamber ensemble orchestrations, what truly sets them apart is the combination of Josienne’s divinely nuanced, emotionally affecting voice and Ben’s intricately expressive, adroit guitar technique. They cite Sandy Denny, June Tabor, Nic Jones and Pierre Bensusan as respective influences but theirs is a captivating sound that’s all their own.

The misery, mirth and sheer beauty of their performances has taken them to such auspicious stages as Cambridge Folk Festival, Bristol’s Colston Hall and London’s Purcell Rooms. A far cry from the pub backrooms and sparsely attended acoustic nights where they began.
