Marillion

Wednesday 11 April, 7pm, Sage One

Marillion’s music is more than prog, it’s musically-experimental and yet-emotional. Within the genre it has a uniquely soul-baring aspect which sets the band apart and has elicited an almost religiously zealous following.

After nearly 40 years, the band has evolved into a vibrant and international musical force, flourishing seemingly outside of fashion and mainstream media exposure. Since their formation, they have had 19 Top 30 singles, four of which made the Top 10.

Their most recent album, F E A R, peaked at No. 4 in the UK album charts and No. 1 in the rock chart last year and was given a 5-star review by The Guardian.

Winners of a staggering eight Categories in 2016 Prog Mag Awards, Marillion elicit remarkable devotion from their international fan base. To those who already love Marillion, the band is something special. To the uninitiated, it’s a love affair waiting to happen.

Classical Season 2017/18 | RNS Presents

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

Friday 13 April, 7.30pm, Sage One

  • Yan Pascal Tortelier* conductor
  • Steven Osborne piano
  • BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
  • Beethoven Egmont Overture
  • Ravel Piano Concerto in G
  • Berlioz Symphonie fantastique

After their successful first visit last season, the BBC SSO return, this time with Yan Pascal Tortelier, for a programme celebrating the ‘Auld Alliance’. Steven Osborne is the soloist in Ravel’s jazz-inspired piano concerto, before Berlioz’s revolutionary programme symphony takes us from an opium-inspired ball, via a march to the scaffold, to a witches’ Sabbath.

Yan Pascal Tortelier enjoys a distinguished career as guest conductor of the world’s most prestigious orchestras. He began his musical career as a violinist and, at fourteen, won first prize for violin at the Paris Conservatoire, making his soloist debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra shortly afterwards. Following general musical studies with Nadia Boulanger, Tortelier studied conducting with Franco Ferrara at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena.

* The BBC SSO regrets to announce that, due to unforeseen circumstances, Donald Runnicles, the orchestra’s Conductor Emeritus, has had to withdraw from the performance at Sage Gateshead on 13 April. The orchestra is very grateful that Yan Pascal Tortelier has agreed to step in to conduct both performances. The programmes remain unchanged.

Tina has never been in love. Now she’s the bridesmaid at her sister’s wedding and can’t move for relatives asking: ‘When is it going to be you?’ But Tina insists she’s better off on her own. If you haven’t got love, you can’t lose it, right? Yet as the wedding day unfolds, her determination not to let anyone in starts to falter.

Streetwise Opera and Royal Northern Sinfonia present Tell Me The Truth About Love, a Tyneside #LoveOpera, featuring a range of classical, folk and modern music, from Mozart to Stevie Wonder, including Geordie favourites Big RiverBlaydon Races and The Water of Tyne.

This lively music experience will make you laugh, sing along, and shed a tear or two, as we celebrate 100 years of life and love on Tyneside.

The opera takes its title from one of Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs, and includes new music by Will Todd and Anna Appleby. The world premiere is directed by Olivier Award winner Bijan Sheibani, designed by Linbury Prize winner Samal Blak, with story and text by Meriel Sheibani-Clare, and additional text by Streetwise Opera performers.

Tell Me The Truth About Love will be performed by adults from Streetwise Opera Newcastle Gateshead who have experienced or are at risk of homelessness. It features critically-acclaimed mezzo-soprano Anna Huntley as Tina, musicians from Royal Northern Sinfonia, and is produced by Streetwise Opera in partnership with Royal Northern Sinfonia, Sage Gateshead, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, Recovery College Collective, Changing Lives, and media partner BBC Newcastle.
